The S550, A “Specially Outfitted Car” - Designed Out Of Innovation
The Mercedes Benz S550 is part of the S-Class, which are the largest sedans, under a division of Daimler AG, yet. They are the best selling line of luxury flagship sedans , featuring nine lines of models since the 1950’s. Since then, they have been the premiere display of every new innovation that has been offered, such as the first air bag , seat belt pre-tensioners and ESP . Most of the S-Class models come with available V6, V8 and V12 engines, with optional diesel power trains.
The name S-Class which is used to classify these cars comes from the German word “Sonderklasse “, meaning loosely “special class” or automotive like “a specially outfitted car”. The first of this legacy was released in 1973 and five generations of the S-Class sedans have been on the market since.
CL-Class
SEC and S Coupe were names given to S-Class models that had only 2 doors. The year 1998 marked the spin off to an entirely new name the CL-Class . This remained the tag for this type of vehicle until the name S Coupe was reborn during the mid generation change up of the C216 in 2009.
